Paris Agreement: Ecological Challenges in light of the Common Good

The United States’ announcement of its intention to withdraw from the international agreement signed in 2015 in Paris places the fight against global warming at the heart of the debate. In this context, the notion of the common good is capable of shedding unique light on the ecological challenges of our time.

In full awareness of the ecological urgency of the situation, the Chair of the Common Good of the UR Religion, Culture, and Society (EA 7403) of the Catholic Institute of Paris unveils the topic of its 2nd international conference : Ecological Challenges in light of the Common Good.

Global warming and transitions in the energy sector, protection of biodiversity and the rights of nature, natural resources and goods held in common: so many themes, which call for a re-thinking of the foundations of social organization, that is to say, of the common good of society.

Inversely, recourse to the notion of the common good is capable of elucidating the ecological challenges to the extent that this notion, rich in its complex heritage, is not reducible to the good of the society, but rather includes personal rights and the good of the entire world as well.

On April 5-6 2018, the Chair of the Common Good of the UR  Religion, Culture, and Society (EA 7403) of the Catholic Institute of Paris will address these questions by drawing upon various ways of thinking (those of geophysics, biology, political science, law, economics…), accompanied by philosophical and theological reflection with a view to a more profound understanding of the notion of creation.
