Becoming Parisian at ILCF

Yunxuan Chen is from China and currently a rising sophomore at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts, USA.

Why did you want to come to France and why Paris in particular?

My French professor would always mix French culture into our class, including food such as classic French pastries, cheese, and wine; French art, culture, and literature. I learned to love all of these things and wanted to experience them in person. I chose Paris because it is a hub of art and fashion, the perfect environment for me to explore my interests and experience French culture in addition to studying.

Why did you want to study French?

I started learning French because it is such a beautiful language. Whenever I hear people speaking French, it always sounds so elegant. After I learned more about the language, and the culture behind it, I decided that I would love to continue learning and improving my French. My current level is B1 and my goal is to have a B2 level. I hope I eventually can successfully carry out daily conversation in French.

What has been your favorite part of the program so far?

What I love the most about this program is all of the faculty and staff. All of the teachers are caring and kind, helping me as much as they can. Especially my professor Guillaume who has a great methodology of teaching French and humorous magical power to cheer up the class. This has really made my learning experience much easier and more meaningful.

Why would you recommend this program to others?

Firstly, I love the caring atmosphere of this program. I felt this even before I arrived, because when I asked questions about the program, I would always receive immediate and thorough responses. Secondly, there are three cultural tours every week, which allows me to explore Paris by learning about it’s history and the culture behind it. Lastly, the class challenges me to learn French through speaking, listening, writing, and reading.

How has it been adjusting to life in Paris?

Adjusting to life in Paris, means incorporating some of the Parisian lifestyle into my daily life, with picnics at school, reading books in gardens, and sitting at a café with friends, speaking for hours.
