Introduction

An in-depth study of some significant characteristics of the modern American presidency from its emergence in the 19th century until World War II with analysis of primary sources. The seminars aim to help students to develop their analytical skills and use knowledge acquired from the lectures.

Week 2 : The Emergence of the modern presidency : Wildavsky’s Dual President Theory
Week 3 : Abraham Lincoln : The Prerogative President
Week 4 : Theodore Roosevelt : The Rhetorical President
Week 5 : Woodrow Wilson : The Stewardship President
Week 6 : Woodrow Wilson & New Diplomacy
Week 7 : The Jazz Age Presidency
Week 8 : Franklin D. Roosevelt & The New Deal
Week 9 : FDR & World War II
Week 10 : An Imperial Presidency?
Week 11: “My President, right or wrong”
Week 12 : Exam Revision

Objectives

By the end of the semester, you will have a good understanding of what makes the American Presidency different even unique in how it functions.
