Important Information: In 2026–27, the content of this course will be identical to that of the Year 2 Bachelor’s course in the Fall term entitled ‘Introduction to British Contemporary Art History (Bachelor Year 2 / Fall)’. 

Introduction

This course provides an education to British art during the 19th century from 1848 to 1914 with a focus on the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, the Aesthetic movement and the Arts and Crafts in England and Scotland. It also includes an introduction to Gender studies applied to the artistic field with sessions dedicated to female artists in the Pre-Raphaelite and Arts and Crafts movements.

Objectives

By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- understand the importance of the relationship between art and political power
- know the specifics of British cultural and ist evolution over two centuries of creation
- demonstrate an appropriate use of specific vocabulary
- develop the ability to identify and analyze a work of art

Admission

Prerequisites training

Everyone is welcome in this class however a background in Art History is welcome as it is meant for 3rd year bachelor’s degree students.

Program

Methods of Instruction

The course is divided into 12 2-hours lectures on a weekly basis, all year long. The program is however meant to stop conveniently at the end of the first semester for international students who are present only for one semester.

Assessment and Final Grade

Students staying until January / May finals will take the exam as the French students (a 2h exam that requires either an essay question on a topic seen in class or a work of art to analyze and comment upon). Exchange students leaving before the finals will be asked to hand-in a 3000 words paper on a topic given by the professor at the beginning of the semester. Final exam / hand-in paper: 100% of the grade.
