Covering different periods and themes, this course offers a view of the ensemble of what might be termed British history before 1900. The social, national and geographical boundaries of “British art” will be interrogated, inviting enquiries on colonialism, the town and the country,
literacy, freedom of expression and the institutionalisation of art. Through the study of a wide range of periods and examples, from William Blake to William Morris via medieval manuscripts, a heterogenous tapestry will be considered
Objectives
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- have in a depth knowledge of British art history from the Tudor period to the Victorian era, be able to recognize art movements, artists and the iconography of some scenes
- write an analysis of a work of art
- be able to write an essay on a given topic
