The course is based on press reviews and presentations by the students, followed by debates, with students given the opportunity to explore topics relating to their own interests.
Objectives
The course aims to develop students’ spoken skills in relation to current affairs and topics in the news, to enable them to take part in nuanced discussion using appropriate language, and to demonstrate an understanding of context and perspective in news reporting.
A short presentation of an exemplar topic by the instructor will be followed by the opportunity for class discussion and debate. Wherever possible, students will have the chance to choose their own topics, and time will be given to prepare and debate in small groups.
Assessment and Final Grade
Continuous assessment, including one individual and one group presentation during the term, in addition to general class participation.
Course Requirements
Regular attendance, class participation in speaking activities, and satisfactory completion of the two oral presentations.
