Admission

Prerequisites training

In order to follow this course, students are expected to have a level of English that enables them to understand a simple text, from economic and everyday press.

Program

Methods of Instruction

The texts to be translated will be distributed at the beginning of the course. After reading and understanding the text, students will work individually or in groups on a part of the text to propose a translation to the rest of the class. Afterwards, a time of exchange will be offered to discuss the translations. This will enable students to discuss the quality of their translations, and how to improve them.

Assessment and Final Grade

Two evaluations will be conducted during the semester to assess the students’ comprehension of the class and its requirements:
− A translation to be completed at home, on a theme studied in class, to assess the students' syntax and vocabulary.
− A second 1-hour exam, to be completed during class time. The aim of this test is to assess the students' ability to translate a simple text within a given timeframe and with limited resources.
A third assessment based on the student’s participation during the course might be conducted.

Course Requirements

It is mandatory to attend this course, and to complete all required exams. Students more than 10 minutes late will not be accepted in class.
