This class teaches the basics of film analysis. It will introduce students to the terminology and theoretical frameworks of film analysis, and notably learn about such key filmmaking elements as frame composition, mise-en-scène, the use of light, narration, and character identification.
Objectives
Students should be able to name, characterize and analyze specific formal aspects of short film sequences.
The first half of the semester is devoted to an in-depth introduction to the key terms of film analysis. It is completed by a guided analysis of opening sequences. Then, over the second half of the semester, students present their own take on various film sequences using the tools of film analysis.
Assessment and Final Grade
Oral presentation and final exam. Each assessment is worth 50% of the final grade.
