Introduction

This course provides an education to British art during the 19th century from the 1890s to 1920s with a focus on the Camden Town group or Vorticism.

Objectives

By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- understand the importance of the relationship between art and political power
- know the specifics of British cultural and ist evolution over several devades of creation
- demonstrate an appropriate use of specific vocabulary
- develop the ability to identify and analyze a work of art

Admission

Prerequisites training

Everyone is welcome in this class, however a certain background in 19th century history is appreciated.

Program

Methods of Instruction

The course is divided into 12 2-hours lectures on a weekly basis, all year long. The program is however meant to stop conveniently at the end of the first semester for international students who are present only for one semester.
 

Assessment and Final Grade

Students staying until January / May finals will take the exam as the French students (a 2h exam that requires either an essay question on a topic seen in class or a work of art to analyze and comment upon). Exchange students leaving before the finals will be asked to hand-in a 3000 words paper on a topic given by the professor at the beginning of the semester. Final exam / hand-in paper: 100% of the grade.
