Introduction

The course centers on the reading and analysis of authentic English language documents destined for a highly educated adult audience (The Atlantic, The Economist). The students make a presentation about a news topic of their choice in English and write an in-class essay. Topics include China-Taiwan tensions, the conflicts in the Middle East, and the genocide in Tigray.

Objectives

➢ The students are taught to read high-level English language articles, put them in context and improve their knowledge of general culture.
➢ To encourage students to engage in thoughtful discourse and debate on media-related issues.

Methods of Instruction

Interactive lectures by the professor, discussions, debates, student presentations (with
instructions provided by the teacher, questions, and feedback).
 

Assessment and Final Grade

One presentation in English and one written exam focusing on a geopolitical topic.
 

Course Requirements

The students are expected to participate actively and complete their assignments.
