What is a Canonical Licentiate?

The Canonical Licentiate is a degree recognized as equivalent to a Master’s level qualification (120 ECTS credits). Canonical degrees have been recognized as equivalent to French national higher education degrees since the 2008 France–Holy See Agreement.

Required Background

Language requirements

This Master’s program is taught entirely in English. Applicants must therefore demonstrate a minimum B2+ level (CEFR), with test results dated within two years at the time of application.

Accepted tests:

  • IELTS: score ≥ 6.5

  • TOEFL iBT: score ≥ 90

  • Duolingo: score ≥ 110

Possible exemptions:

  • Native English speakers

  • Academic programs with at least 70% of courses taught in English

Target Audience

This program is intended for students holding a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification. It is open to students from ICP’s Bachelor’s in Social Sciences (International Affairs and Political Science track, Economics and Management), as well as students with backgrounds in political science, economics and management, law, languages, history, and geography.

  • M1 (Year 1): admission based on application file and interview.

  • M2 (Year 2): opening planned for 2027.

Program

Master 1 – Foundations and Methods

M1 introduces the fundamentals of international relations, global economic and political governance, and contemporary international issues. Students also develop methodological and practical skills essential for analyzing complex situations and understanding the mechanisms of international cooperation and decision-making.

Master 2 – International Analysis and Strategy

M2 deepens themes such as international security, economic and trade policy, and crisis and global risk management. It emphasizes strategic analysis, international decision-making, and preparation for professional practice, enabling students to design and evaluate strategies in international and multicultural contexts.

The teaching team brings together professors who are experts in international relations, political science, economics, and management, combining academic knowledge and professional experience to prepare students for international careers.

Internship(s)

Internships

Internships are scheduled in M1 (3 to 4 months) and M2 (4 to 6 months). They enable students to apply their skills and prepare for professional integration.

International mobility is possible in M2. A gap year may also be considered between M1 and M2.

Assessment

Students complete a research thesis, allowing them to apply the analytical and methodological skills acquired during the program and to develop their ability to address complex issues rigorously.
