Covering different themes and periods, this course offers an insight into the diverse forms of art produced in Great Britain after 1900. The social, national and geographical boundaries of “British art” will be interrogated, inviting enquiries on colonialism, urbanisation, multiculturalism and the institutionalisation of art. Through the study of a wide range of periods and examples, from Wyndham Lewis to conceptual art via COUM Transmissions, a heterogenous tapestry will be considered.
Objectives
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- have in a depth knowledge of British art history from the Victorian era to today, be able to recognize art movements, artists and the iconography of some scenes
- write an analysis of a work of art
- be able to write an essay on a given topic
