Introduction

Although, historically speaking, the great religions preceded the emergence of nations and states, they were long neglected by Political Science. However, the 1970s and 1980s saw a resurgence of religion around the world and its incursion into politics, with religions becoming increasingly politicized and influential on the international stage. As a result, since the early 2000s, there has been a proliferation of research on « Religions and International Relations ». This introductory course presents the various international issues in which religions are involved: war, terrorism, reconciliation, democratization, human rights and development.
1) Religion and politics: a historical approach
2) Religions in the world: a geopolitical approach
3) Religion, war and terrorism
4) Religions, peace and reconciliation
5) Religions, democratization and human rights
6) Religions and sustainable development
7) Conclusion: religion and IR theories
